Teece shines in Sorrento win

Cameron Teece scored the only goal as Sorrento defeated Bayswater City 1-0 to boost their top four hopes at Percy Doyle Reserve.

The win moves the Gulls level on points with today’s opponents and two points off Balcatta and Inglewood United, who currently occupy third and fourth spots in the NPL WA.

Defeat for Bayswater ended a challenging week which included a trip to Brisbane where they went out of the FFA Cup and a loss to Floreat in the Belt Up Cup Final. On a bright note for Chris Coyne’s team, they play three of bottom four sides in the next three rounds.

Sorrento made a fast start with top scorer Teece hitting the bar and flashing one wide of the upright inside 10 minutes.

Teece, who could have had a hat-trick in the first half, did eventually find the back of the net when he pounced on a loose ball after good work from Jordan Roberts to score his 10th NPL WA goal of 2019.

Bayswater looked flat-footed in the early stages after their midweek travels but found their feet as the half wore on with Gordon Smith striking just wide, before Gustavo Marulanda whipped a free kick over the bar.

James Morgan then made a tremendous save on the stroke of half time when he denied Jason Mirco from point blank range and the Gulls went into the break ahead.

Bayswater picked up their momentum from the back end of the opening period and Marulanda continued to look lively, as his shot was parried behind by Morgan at the near post.

With the game stretched and the visitors throwing numbers forward, Sorrento had chances to secure the points with Teece running through on goal and firing wide, before Spence gathered Roberts’ drive at the second attempt.

Adam Tong was introduced as an auxiliary centre forward with five minutes to play and he slashed Bayswater’s best chance wide in the dying moments, as the Gulls held on for a third consecutive NPL WA win.
