Bayswater City VS Cockburn City

June 23, 2018 | Frank Drago Reserve A

Bayswater’s magnificent seven

Report by Jayden Lihou

Gustavo Giron Marulanda scored four goals as Bayswater City destroyed Joondalup United 7-0 in Round Two of the NPL WA season at Frank Drago Reserve on Saturday.

Incredibly, it was goalless at half-time. But once Giron Marulanda scored the first with under half-an-hour remaining, Joondalup fell apart and the floodgates opened.

The striker scored three more in under 15 minutes, then produced two assists for Gian Albano before substitute Andrija Jukic made it seven.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne was pleased with his side’s hunger in the second half.

Goals aside, I think the possession was excellent today and we controlled the game very well,” he said.

In the first half we didn’t play the ball forward and in behind the defenders often enough, but in the second we did just that and it changed the whole dynamic of the game.

Coyne was naturally delighted with the performance of Giron Marulanda.

He’s had a couple of tough weeks personally, but he had the burden taken off his shoulders today so could go out and enjoy his football,” Coyne said.

And when you see a happy Gustavo, the results speak for themselves and long may it continue. It wasn’t just the goals either because his work rate and assists were excellent today.”

The scoring began in the 62nd minute when Luke Ninkovic stole the ball off a defender before cutting it back to Giron Marulanda, who tapped the ball home.

Giron Marulanda was in the right place at the right time again five minutes later as he scored another tap-in, this time after Arron Maplestone had squared the ball to him.

The Bayswater No.9 completed his hat-trick on 73 minutes when he curled a free-kick into the back of the net, then soon added his fourth after a through ball from Albano.

Giron Marulanda returned the favour in the 83rd minute when he laid the ball off to Albano, who made it 5-0.

The next goal was almost a carbon copy, as Giron Marulanda played in Albano to finish.

And Jukic got in on the action in the 87th minute when Joondalup were again exposed after losing the ball in midfield.

Joondalup coach Nick Jennings condemned his side’s “shambolic” defensive performance in the second-half.

We lost our structure and shape, which we have been working on all week and which was really impressive in the first-half,” he said.

That second-half was not acceptable so there will be lots of changes made to the team in preparation for the Stirling game next week.
