BURTON HAT-TRICK SENDS BAYSWATER INTO FINAL
Monday, February 24, 2014
After taking all before them last season, Bayswater City will have the opportunity to retain their Football West Night Series crown following a come from behind 5-1 win against Inglewood United in the semi-final at Macedonia Park yesterday.
Report by Peter Simcox
City will take on Floreat Athena in Saturday’s final at Dorrien Gardens after Athena edged out Bunbury Forum Force 4-2 on penalties after the sides finished the match 1-1.
Greg Sharland’s stunning free-kick had given Inglewood the early lead before Steve Burton went to work, scoring three goals, with others coming from Adrian Caceres and Adam Bachiller.
Burton said a half-time spray from coach Chris Coyne got the side going and their performance after the break should send a message to the rest of the league that they are looking for a repeat of last season.
“We were a bit out of sorts in the first half but after a few words at half-time from the coach, I thought our second half was fantastic,” said Burton.
“Although we were up at the break, the coach said the two late goals had covered up the cracks but didn’t hide them. We came out after the break and were more clinical and we scored some great goals and should have had a few more.”
Inglewood began the better side and Ryan Clarke’s long-range shot flashed inches past the post early. And they were ahead on 11 minutes when Sharland curled a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area, up and over the wall and into the net despite City keeper Devon Spence getting a hand to it.
Bayswater looked out of sorts but hit back on the half hour. Brian Farrell’s cross from the right found Burton, who made no mistake from close-range.
It was end-to-end football with both keepers saving their sides. Farrell’s shot was pushed around the post by Luke Martino before Spence did likewise to Clarke’s stinging drive. But in first-half stoppage time, Bayswater hit the front. Dixon found Paul McCarthy on the edge of the penalty area, and he played in Burton to score from close range.
It was a different story after the break with Bayswater rampant. McCarthy played a superb through ball to Caceres, who had only been on the pitch five minutes, and he fired low past Martino. Then three minutes later it was 4-1; James Isaia’s long ball sent Burton racing clear and the striker finished clinically past Martino to complete his hat-trick.
Jonathon Stripe hit the post for Inglewood on the hour but it was Bayswater, who continued to dominate and they added a fifth in the last minute. Jamie Coyne’s long-range shot was only parried by Martino and Bachiller was quickest to react to score from the rebound.
Coyne, who led the club to the triple last season in his first year in charge, was delighted with the way his side had responded to his half-time address.
“I was really happy with the second half performance but I want to forget the first half,” he said.
“I thought we kept our shape really well and executed the game plan, as they were very hard to break down. The whole side put in a good performance, and I know it’s only a pre-season competition but the lads came back fit and raring to go, and they want to raise the bar from last season, which as a coach, is pleasing.”
