Ryan Borrett Match Report NPLWA Round 23

Bayswater City came back from 2-0 down at half-time to claim a 3-2 victory over Perth Glory at Ashfield Arena on Sunday in round 23 of the PS4 NPLWA.

The win takes Bayswater to third place in the league table and one point behind leaders Inglewood United with three rounds remaining.

Perth Glory took the lead early and then quickly added another goal that stunned Bayswater who were favourites coming into the match.

Bayswater came out firing in the second half and levelled the scores after 25 minutes before Trent Kay’s powerful header completed the comeback in the 86th minute to give Bayswater the win and keep their title dreams alive.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne said he was delighted with the comeback.

“At half time I just said to the lads to believe in themselves, and I’ve never doubted their ability and they kept going so I’m tremendously proud of them.

“Their endeavour, their desire, and the team spirit was fantastic. I couldn’t fault any of them today.”

Glory went ahead in the 17th minute through midfielder Brandon Wilson’s excellent long range effort.

They doubled their advantage in the 29th minute as captain Daniel Stynes darted down the right side of the box and cut back a pass to striker Michael Domfeh who got his shot away past the surrounding defenders.

Bayswater’s first goal came in the 55th minute after Luka Ninkovic got on the end of a Gustavo Giron Marulanda low cross to finish.

It took a Todd Howarth deflected free kick to level it for the visitors as Bayswater seemingly took control of the match.

The Glory came close to taking back the lead in the 85th minute but Bayley Brown-Montgomery’s close range effort was brilliantly blocked at the last second by a sliding Bayswater defender.

A minute later Trent Kay rose with a powerful header to give Bayswater the win with just minutes remaining.

Perth Glory coach John Gibson said he thought his team lost their belief in the second half.

“The first half was really competitive, but I don’t think we believed we were good enough in the second half and that killed us.

“We wanted to stay aggressive in the second half but we couldn’t do that and that let us down.”

Coyne said Bayswater’s title fight will continue until the very end.

“It’s up to us, we just have to keep winning games and focus on ourselves, and Armadale next week will be a tough match.”
