Roberts double in Gulls fightback

Report by Dennis Gedling

An amazing equaliser in the dying seconds from Jordan Roberts saw Sorrento escape with a 2-2 draw against Bayswater City at Frank Drago Reserve.

After being 2-0 down at half-time, the visitors came back with Roberts scoring a brace to keep the momentum going for the Gulls while Bayswater again cursed their poor form.

It was an open first half with Bayswater testing Sorrento keeper James Morgan in the early stages. Gian Albano was especially dangerous, first cutting in from the left to fire inches over before another attempt was well saved low down by Morgan.

On 26 minutes Albano finally got his goal, albeit in unusual circumstances. An overhit delivery looked to be going out for a goalkick, only for Jason Mirco to get a boot to the ball. It ricocheted off the upright with the keeper beaten, giving Albano a simple finish.

Bayswater went further ahead on 37 minutes and this time it was Mirco the scorer and Albano the provider, the latter’s cross perfect.

At half-time Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell brought on Alex Morgan for Darryl Platten and he gave them enough impetus to chase the game. On 57 minutes they pulled a goal back after Jack Salter found the space to put in a dangerous cross that left Roberts with an easy finish.

Sorrento now had all the running and Bayswater looked unsure, giving the ball away needlessly. Salter shot just wide while Bayswater keeper Dejan Aleksic made some important saves.

But with time running out an angled ball found Roberts, who controlled and finished with some skill to the delight of the smattering of travelling supporters and the bench.

After the game Bayswater coach Chris Coyne said his team didn’t deserve to win.

We played some great football in the first half and didn’t have much to change but Sorrento rolled their sleeves up and we didn’t want to fight,” he said.

Gulls coach Harnwell was a relieved man after the game.

We were okay in the first half and we had a couple of chances before they scored, which we’ll work on. But it was a great second half.

In the penultimate round Bayswater host Forrestfield while Sorrento are at home to Armadale.
