Boi’s the main man for Floreat

Report by Max Hayden-Evans

Two first-half goals from Ludovic Boi ensured Floreat Athena pulled off the latest upset in this unpredictable NPL WA campaign as they beat Bayswater City 2-0 at Frank Drago Reserve on Saturday.

In a Round Nine performance that frustrated City supporters, the home side never got going and despite some late pressing were unable to break down a resolute Athena defence.

Floreat coach Howard Tweats praised his side’s efforts but admitted: “I’m relieved to get a performance under our belt, we know we should be achieving this every week.

“This is only one game – we’ve got a lot of quality players. When we settle down and get to the game we want to play, we’ll be a match for any side.”

Bayswater started the match brightly and probably should have opened the scoring but Gian Albano could only manage to strike the goalpost with his close-range shot.

Floreat were able to weather Bayswater’s early play and found themselves ahead on 22 minutes as Boi cut inside his man brilliantly to finish past City goalkeeper Devon Spence.

And eight minutes later Boi grabbed his second when he connected with a fantastic cross from Phillip Arnold to head home.

Boi and Arnold proved a constant menace throughout and on another day might have put the game to bed after a string of second-half chances went unrewarded.

Bayswater’s defence struggled to contain the speed of the Floreat counter-attack and often found themselves giving the ball away in dangerous positions. Bayswater’s attackers also proved wasteful in front of goal with Luke Salmon unable to make the most of some good positions.

Andrija Jukic came closest to dragging the home side back into the match when his spectacular volley struck the underside of the crossbar midway through the second-half.

Bayswater built up some pressure late on but couldn’t beat Athena’s Jason Saldaris, who pulled off several good saves on his way to a well-deserved clean sheet.

Tweats said of Saldaris: “He’s been immense for us this early part of the season. We took the lead today and he did what every custodian needs to do.”

Floreat’s win sees them move away from the bottom of the ladder and closer to mid-table, while City’s loss was their third for the season and followed last Saturday’s defeat to Perth SC.
