Bayswater City extended their lead to three points at the top of the PS4 National Premier Leagues WA after coming from behind to beat Floreat Athena 3-1 at Frank Drago Reserve.

The blockbuster clash between the top two was ultimately decided by three goals in 16 minutes from the hosts, but Lewis McMahon’s penalty gave Floreat a deserved lead at the break.

The defending champions, who had gone into the game with a goal-difference lead over Floreat, showed their class in the second half, though, as quick-fire goals from David Heagney and Danny Dixon turned the game on its head.

Todd Howarth’s blistering, deflected strike from distance ensured Bayswater would go three points clear at the top, and coach Chris Coyne praised the former Perth Glory midfielder.

“He’s a cultured player with a cracking left peg and I was fortunate to play with him, so I know what he’s all about,” he said.

“It’s funny because you don’t get to see the 20 (efforts on goal) that he misses on a Tuesday and Thursday at training.

“But it was a clean strike and I’ll take that all day long if it’s going to give us that cushion during a game.”

Coyne acknowledged that it was a clichéd game of two halves and that he had to change the tactics at the interval.

“I’ll take the blame for the first half. I sent the boys out with the wrong instructions,” he said.

“I asked them to play deep, sit off and let them have the ball. But they went long and pushed us even further back.

“We knew they would play with numbers in midfield and we had to congest that and keep it tight, but then we decided to go in behind them in the wide areas.

“Once we pushed them higher up the pitch, there was only one team who looked like scoring and even though they had some half chances we were comfortable.”

Both sides opened the game with a high tempo and that led to several good chances with Heagney missing the target early after getting in-behind.

Dejan Aleksic then reacted sharply to tip over a curler from Howarth, which had glanced off the head of Aryn Williams.

Floreat more than matched their opponents, though, as Devon Spence denied Jack Allen from range, before the visitors were awarded a penalty five minutes before the break.

Howarth was adjudged to have blocked with his arm in the area from Ludovic Boi’s shot, and Lewis McMahon sent Spence the wrong way to put Athena ahead.

Coyne needed to adjust Bayswater’s game plan and Bor Bor Sam’s introduction early in the second half gave the home side a much-needed spark.

Moments after coming on, Sam received the ball wide right, showing great skill to beat his marker before crossing for Heagney to tap home.

Six minutes later Dixon was in the right place at the right time to fire the hosts ahead after Howarth’s corner was not cleared.

Momentum had truly swung and Aleksic had to be alert to palm away Gustavo Giron Marulanda’s drive from distance.

But the Floreat goalkeeper had no chance soon after, as Howarth unleashed from 30m and found the net via a deflection to seal the victory.

Bayswater remain undefeated in the PS4 National Premier League this season and Coyne was particularly pleased with his team’s goal scoring threat from all areas of the pitch.

“We’ve got so many players who are capable of scoring goals in this team,” he said.

“I know centre forwards want to score all the time, but sometimes it’s good that the onus isn’t on them scoring every week.

“When they get shared around it’s great for me and I’m buzzing for the boys. They’re three points clear and can go into Monday’s cup game with confidence.”

Bayswater take on Cockburn City in a Westfield FFA Cup preliminary quarter-final against Cockburn City at Dalmatinac Park tomorrow.
