Peter Simcox Match Report NPL WA Round 15

Bayswater City’s march to the PS4 National Premier Leagues WA title continued on Sunday, after a convincing 2-0 win against local rivals Perth SC at Frank Drago Reserve.

First half goals to Gustavo Giron Marulanda and Todd Howarth put the home side in control, but even though Perth pressed in the second half, Bayswater held firm and ran out winners.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne said they dictated terms for most of the game and he thought they should have won by a few more.

“Every time we went forward we looked dangerous, and we were slightly disappointed at the break we weren’t more in front,” he said.

“But we were creating chances, and if we weren’t creating them we would be more worried, the players are working really hard, and got their rewards today.”

Coyne said they let Perth have the ball in the second half and hit them on the counter attack.

“We sat off them in the second half and we knew we had their measure, and we had the artillery to catch them on the counter attack,” he said.

“I was confident they couldn’t hurt us, yes they had a couple of chances, but overall we dominated and thoroughly deserved the points.”

Bayswater skipper, and former Perth SC defender Trent Kay, also said they deserved the points.

“We dominated the first half and should have put the game to bed, but the post came to their rescue,” he said.

“These games are always one we look forward too, and both sets of supporters are passionate about their club, so we are happy to take the points.”

The defender said spots are up for grabs in the starting eleven, and the players know they have to perform.

“We’ve got a good squad at the moment, Tongy (Adam Tong) has come in and added stability and Sam (Mitchinson) has returned, so competition for places is up for grabs, and we all know about it,” he said.

“We can’t sit on our laurels and need to perform week in and week out, and if you don’t there is someone else who can take your spot.”

Perth knew three points were vital if they we’re to keep in touch of the league leaders, but they found themselves behind on 19 minutes.

David Heagney played the ball over the top for Marulanda, and the Columbian hitman, made no mistake, firing low past Francis Soale.

Perth lost defender James Marocchi to a nasty leg injury, after he collided with the post, trying to clear Marulanda’s shot off the line. He was carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Marco Santalucia.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors, when Bayswater doubled their lead on 28 minutes. Marulanda was brought down 18m from goal by Dean Evans, and Howarth curled the resulting free kick up and over the wall and into top corner of the net.

Perth was giving the ball away cheaply, much to the displeasure of their bench, and Bayswater were ripping them apart, and they should have added another two minutes later. Danny Dixon played Marulanda in on goal, but Soale stood tall to thwart him.

The woodwork then came to Perth’s rescue four minutes from halftime, and it was Marulanda again. He outpaced his marker, rounded the keeper, but his shot hit the post and away to safety.

But on the stroke of half time Perth should have pulled one back. Mark Pritchard played the ball over the top to Nicholas Ambrogio, who raced in on goal, but his lob over the on-coming Devon Spence drifted the wrong side of the upright.

Then straight down the other end Bayswater almost nicked a third, Heagney crossing to Dixon, whose shot hit the base of the post and away to safety.

After the break Dixon fired over from the edge of the penalty area, before Howarth’s in-swinging corner was punched clear by Soale.

Perth, were having plenty of possession, and Bayswater were happy to sit back and hit them on the break.

But Perth did have a number of chances. Pritchard’s close-range header was saved by Spence, before he saw another shot from the edge of the box saved low by the Bayswater custodian.

With Perth pushing men forward Bayswater were finding holes at the back. The lively Heagney made space down the left, cut inside David Cyrus, and picked out Marulanda.

The striker unselfishly played the ball back to Brian Farrell on the edge of the penalty area, but he was closed down and the chance was gone.

To Perth’s credit they continued to press, but lacked the final ball in the last third of the pitch, and at the whistle it was Bayswater celebrating another ‘Rivalry Round’ victory against them.
