Memorable season ends the way it started for history making Bayswater Squad

By Jason Harris

Bayswater have made local footballing history with an unprecedented four trophies this season after winning the State League Grand Final 1-0 against Perth.

This title joins the Night Series, Cool Ridge Cup and the NPLWA Premiership title in the Bayswater trophy cabinet for the 2014 season.

After all the pre match festivities had concluded which had included two successful final victories for Perth’s under 18 and 20 teams, the question had to be asked could the senior team make it a three-peat on their home pitch.

Within two minutes, David Heagney tried an audacious attempt trying to chip Perth goalkeeper Francis Soale who he saw slightly of his line. Luckily for the home team he went back and managed to claim the ball.

A few minutes later a ball played over the top, nearly put in Gustavo Marulanda but he dragged his shot wide.

Ashley Rosindale had Perth’s best chance after nine minutes after the was played in he fired in a shot from about sixteen yards but Devon Spence made a finger-tip save.

Minutes later, Tim Roberson went on a nice run beating his man Sam Mitchinson before playing a beautiful ball to Aden Da Luz who fired well over the bar from six yards under little pressure.

It was a cagey first twenty minutes with both teams still feeling each other out.
Marulanda then set the game alight, when he went a superb 20 metre burst before his finishing let him down on this occasion, firing well over the goal.

Five-goal hero from the last time both teams met Mark Doninger was quiet in the early stages, and had his first attempt when he tried a low shot, which forced Spence to stretch, but he handled with a minimum of fuss.

Heagney then forced Soale into a save, when he made a strong run into the box. Bayswater midfielder Paul McCarthy was then nearly able to sneak a low shot into the left corner but Soale was up to the task.

The Perth goalkeeper then made a calculated risk to race of his line and win the loose ball, with Heagney in prime position and his gamble paid off as he managed to clear the ball from danger.

The Bayswater front pairing of Heagney and Marulanda were looking the more likely, but just couldn’t find the extra finesse to unlock the Perth door. It was tight, tense 0-0 at half time, just the way cup finals should be.

The Bayswater strikers was continuing to look very lively for the visitors and
the breakthrough came in the 54th minute, when the ball was played across to Heagney who gained a few yards before he fired the ball to the right of Soale and into the corner of the net from 20 yards.

Bayswater were content to let Perth have possession in midfield knowing they had the capabilities to shut them down in the dangerous part of the pitch. The visitors were looking calm and composed despite the slender 1-0 margin in their favour.

Perth substitute Harley Orr thought he had the equaliser when he headed goalwards from a corner, but it was deemed not to have crossed the line.

Bayswater then thought they had strong claims for a penalty when Brian Farrell was bundled over in the box, but their appeals were waved away by the referee.

There were a few late corners for the Bayswater defence to deal with, which they did in a professional fashion.

As the three minutes elapsed, it was celebration time for the Black and Blue and their army of fans who were superb throughout the 90 minutes. David Heagney was deserved winner of the medal for best player on the pitch.

It has been a superb last two seasons for the club winning seven trophies under the tutelage of Chris Coyne who along with his staff has done a fantastic job to turn around the club.

The players lead superbly by captain Trent Kay have met every challenge they have faced with relish and cleared every hurdle despite a deal of adversity along the way.

For Perth although they will be bitterly disappointed but it still has been a fantastic job by Taki Nicolaidis and his players, to turn their fortunes around from 10th last year to a runners up position this season.

It’s been a fascinating season and let’s hope for bigger and better in season 2015.
