Bayswater claim vital point to seal NPLWA Title

By Jason Harris

Bayswater City have claimed the first NPLWA title with a extremely hard fought 1-1 draw against Sorrento at a sun soaked Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

It shaped as being a intriguing battle as Sorrento have given Bayswater a great deal of trouble over the years with their rugged style and with City having played a FFA cup game on Wednesday evening, it was going to be a real challenge for them.

Sorrento had the first attempt on goal, when Scott Bulloch hit the crossbar with Devon Spence just of his line.

Other than that chance, it was a rather uneventful first 15 minutes with the game being played mostly in midfield.

Bayswater’s best chance came after 20 minutes, when a Steve Burton low cross caused some confusion. Adam Bachiller’s shot was closed down quickly but Paul McCarthy shot fired over the goal from close range.

Gustavo Maralunda then fired in a great shot in on goal from around 30 yards which just whizzed over the crossbar.

As time went on in the first half, Bayswater were starting to look more threatening but just could not unlock the Sorrento defence.

A nice move involving Heagney and Steve Burton saw Chris Saldaris fire in a shot, which was saved by the legs of Sorrento goalkeeper Curtis Aspden.

Just before half time, a beautiful ball was played in centrally to David Heagney, who had a one on one chance with Aspden but the goalkeeper raced of his line to shut down the opportunity when it looked a sure thing that the Bayswater striker would score.

So at half time it was scoreless, but it was a cagey encounter with Sorrento resolute in defence and their best opportunities coming from set pieces.

A breakthrough came out of nowhere in the 54th minute, when a Sorrento free kick was swung into the box. It landed at the feet of Reece Vittiglia who twisted and turned before firing the ball low to the left of Spence and into the corner of the net.

Bayswater’s response was quick and Steve Burton fired the ball goal wards but again Aspden was the man in the way.

David Heagney then played in a ball to Declan Hargreaves, who pulled his shot just wide of the Sorrento goal.

It was now one way traffic, but however hard they were trying they still were not able to find the back of the net. Paul McCarthy was the latest player to feel the frustration of being denied by Aspden.

The game developed a desperate edge, as word went round the ground that Perth had equalised, and were just one more goal from the title.

However things changed for the better in the 86th minute from a Todd Howarth corner. Aspden pulled off another sensational save from a Trent Kay flick on and just when you thought more frustration was going the way of the black and blue, up bobbed Paul McCarthy at the back post to knock the ball into the net.

The Bayswater fans were jubilant, as the pressure had been released at exactly the right time.

Bayswater played out the final few minutes and had won the inaugural NPL championship. It was a fitting reward for the club, which had led the way for a major part of the season.

In some ways when Bayswater and Sorrento play each other it is a captivating spectacle, because of the contrast in styles, and it is a game of patience where you need to take your chance when it comes, especially when Curtis Aspden is in such outstanding form.

Now the finals commence which is a mini season in itself. Anything can, and probably will happen. If these teams meet again in September expect another titanic struggle.

“It’s a reward for the marathon but we have to pick ourselves up and go again against Perth but we are potentially two games from the lot.”

Bayswater Captain Trent Kay

” Coming up against Sorrento they are always tough, they’ve been our bogey team for a while now but it was good to get a draw in the end.”

” Last five minutes pretty lucky to get a header which went to the back stick and Macca was there and he did the rest.”

” We qualify for the interstate challenge now against a South Australian team whoever wins their league so we get that game at home and we should get a good crowd for that game.”

Bayswater Defender Chris Saldaris

” They pushed us the whole game and when they got that goal it really killed us but the boys dug deep and we did all we could to get the equaliser.”

” The boys were sore after Wednesday but after some treatment like ice baths the boys just looked after each other which is good.”

” We want to beat Perth next week and get that week off that we hopefully deserve and go through straight to the final.”

Sorrento Coach Jamie Harnwell

” Its a tough one for the players because we had nothing to play for but we wanted to make sure we were fair and we gave Perth a result and I think that’s all we could be asked to do but really pleased with the effort and the way we played.”

” It’s been a inconsistent season for us, two great results against Bayswater great result against Perth but at the end we would want to be where Bayswater are in. the last game of the season playing for the championship.”

“I’m not sure whether Bayswater enjoy playing us too much but I feel we have some big time players like Reece Vittiglia today was sensational so when you have players like that you are always a chance.”
